A TERRIFIED woman was woken in the middle of the night by a man smashing a window at her house, a court was told.

Andrew Day, of Randwick Drive, Worcester, appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Monday after previously pleading guilty to damaging a glass door at a home in Deer Avenue, also in Worcester, on Wednesday, June 11.

Clare Linehan, prosecuting, said the woman was asleep at her home at about 3am when she was woken by the sound of breaking glass.

“She said she was very scared and no longer felt safe in her own home.”

Ms Linehan added that the woman had never seen Day before.

She said: “Day said he was estranged from his ex-partner and son who had not seen for six months.

“He went to where he believed they lived but didn’t know the address.”

The court was also told that the 28-year-old, who drinks about 50 units of alcohol a day, was handed a 12-month conditional discharge in May for throwing a glass of water at a police officer on Friday, April 4.

Satwinder Bains, mitigating, said Day had been diagnosed with depression and had been prescribed medication which sometimes made him “a bit loopy”.

“He tells me he really wants help,” she said. “He needs to sort out his drinking.

“He does feel remorse and he is very apologetic. He was very frustrated that he hasn’t seen his child or his ex-partner.”

The court sentenced him to a 12-month community order including supervision and a six-month alcohol treatment plan followed by 80 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £350 for repair of the window along with £100 compensation, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
