POLICE are urging people heading away for their summer holidays to make sure their home is safe and secure before they leave.

Despite a fall in the number of domestic burglaries in the West Mercia area the police say there is still room for a further reduction in the figures.

They have issued some advice to make sure people are not leaving their home open to thieves.

This includes cancelling deliveries of newspapers so there are no tell tale signs the house is empty, don't leave a spare key outside the house, ask someone to keep an eye on your house, have the lawn mowed if the holiday is a long one and invest in some light timer switches.
