THE WORLD'S fastest man aged over 40 years old has joined the line-up for the Worcester City 10K.

Anthony Whiteman, former Great Britain Olympian and European and Commonwealth medallist, will be hoping to continue the form that has seen him return to prominence a full ten years after his initial retirement from athletics.

Mr Whiteman, who is also the only person to run an indoor mile in under four minutes while over the age of 40, says he has a "very good" relationship with Worcester.

The 42 year-old who holds records at 800 and 1500 metres, said: "My parents live in Worcester and I have a very close relationship with the city, so I fancied taking part in the race, especially as it is across my route that I have ran so many times. When I heard Paula Radcliffe was entering, it pricked my ears up and I entered.

“I’d always kept running since retiring. As a personal trainer I used to run with my clients, but it all snowballed after I entered a race in 2009 and ended up beating a Kenyan and South African across the final 200m.

“I think a lot of the athletes I mentor through On Camp With Kelly – the Kelly Holmes led mentoring programme - base their season around not wanting to be beaten by me now and I am not too far away from the times that challenge for the Great Britain team, but I’m not too fussed about trying to get back to that level.

“It will be difficult to challenge for the win at Worcester as I have been preparing for an 800m race before it. It depends on the level of the athletes who turn up, but if I’m in with a shout with 500m to go, no one will beat me in a sprint.”

The 10K race, which will also feature races for children and 50K run-bike-run event, is scheduled to go ahead on Sunday, September 21.
