TRAVELLERS invaded private land in Worcester before gatecrashing an aqua zumba class at a health and fitness centre.

The group have set up camp with their caravans at the car park outside Bowl Extreme off Droitwich Road in Perdiswell, Worcester, leading to extra police patrols in the area today.

A club member who declined to be named, said three traveller men who looked to be in their late teens or early 20s, gained access to the aqua zumba class in the Nuffield Health pool on Wednesday evening.

She said: "Three of them jumped in the pool and started throwing the dumbbells around, generally being a pain and playing with the safety equipment. It was very annoying."

Inspector Jessica Loxley- Clark of West Mercia Police said: "Following reports of travellers in Perdiswell area of Worcester, close to the Bowl Extreme, West Mercia Police are monitoring the situation and have targeted patrols in the area. The council are liaising with the businesses to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Some of the travellers have moved on, and there are currently six caravans in the area.

"There has been some concern from residents and businesses, and police have responded to incidents where people have tried to gain access to the facilities in Nuffield Health but there have been no other reports of criminality. Any reports of antisocial behaviour will be tackled robustly and positive action taken."

Nuffield Health was unavailable for comment at the time your Worcester News went to press.

Those with information can contact West Mercia Police on 101.

According to the report travellers DID gain access to the fitness centre and cause a nuisance, they didn't just try as the police said. I actually believe travellers behave like this to deliberately provoke reactions from the general public and put two fingers up to the law. Nothing will change until someone in authority makes a stand and uses the powers that exist to deal with them.

This wouldn`t happen if Worcester had a reputation for a no nonsense approach to Travellers but unfortunately it`s the opposite. Word soon gets around that this city and its police are a soft touch and so it will continue.Supposedly there are lawful powers that the Police can take to stop this happening but they never do, always seem to `monitor` the situation until the travellers decide to move on.

Surely a slight amendment to the law, could allow for the "authorities" to seize assets (a vehicle or caravan) as surety until the travellers leave the site, and in the same state as they found it. Why should private land-owners or local council taxpayers have to foot the bill to clear up the mess, and repair the vandalism caused by these people who show no respect for the areas they invade. Lets get tough.

A story about travellers ??? Where is David1875 .... you're a bit slow on this one.....not here to tell us about how West Mercia Police are neglecting their duty by failing to use their powers under sections 61 and 62 of the Public Order Act !!

David, this time, tell us about Section 61 and Section 62, but also tell us about the ACPO and Home Office Guidance on travellers and unlawful encampments that ALL police forces have to comply with, then tell us, in proper detail, about how they have to apply the Human Rights Act to every decision they make, then tell us about the number of legal challenges that have been made to unlawful applications of Section 61 and Section 62 over the years, and how tax payers money has been spent fighting ( and losing) these challenges in court.

As people have already said, the law does need changing, and the law abiding public do need, and deserve protection, but as the (many different) laws stand at the moment folks, it 'aint that simple as the local cops turning up and moving them on......The police are between a rock and a hard place on this issue.

I notice that the University have been on alert over this for the last 24 hours. The gates are all manned and various people have been inconvenienced. It all costs money and as a waste of resources. The police are hampered by procedure but to be honest they don't have a lot in interest in implementing what is available to them. You alway get comments like "oh Irish cars are a pain" when it comes to doing them for car tax etc. If you are assaulted by a gypsy you will get "Well we can knock on the doors of the caravans but no one will come forward and we will never find them" Basically you get apathy from the police because to be fair everyone vanishes before they can get a conviction for anything. From the publics point of view though I think most of us would be happy enough if they were inconvenienced enough to be run down to the station and bothered by the paperwork for an afternoon. If the police were willing (or in some cases allowed) to put the man hours into picking them up for everything they do that is illegal they would soon move on from Worcester and more than likely return less often.

Presterjohn, you make some good comments, which a lot of us would agree with. However, perhaps you can enlighten us, which towns are the ones where the travellers don't go to because of the police ? - We can then check on their local newspaper sites and no doubt read fantastic reports of how the police are moving them on, without being "hampered by procedure". How many travellers have been arrested in Worcester over the past year, and how does this compare to data from other police areas - Again, tell us, and we can find out what these other places are doing better than Worcester. Some facts would be really useful here, with pointers to where the data and information can be found. Thanks.

Sorry I'm not sure what statutory basis ACPO Policy has ?
Perhaps you could explain - are their policies authorised by an Act of Parliament perhaps?
A Statutory Instrument?
Are not police officers holders of a Crown Office anymore?
Is there some law that states police officers are now beholden to ACPO rather than the democratically elected representatives of the public?

Ah Wait a moment isn't ACPO actually short for ACPO Limited? Isn't it in fact a limited company operating on a 'for profit ' basis?

Three blokes jump in pool full of obese women and start messing about. Would be very funny to watch on YouTube until everyone finds out the men are travellers so we all get angry.

Compare this to the 50 man brawl reported at the weekend where travellers were not involved and people got hurt. So much worse than bombing into a swimming pool but for some reason we are less angry about it. Why?

Lets see, the travellers set up shop on private land. They don't have permission to be there but they just do it anyway. If you or I did the same thing we would be arrested and mostly likely cautioned for trespass. One rule for us, another rule for them.

They then gain access to a private facility. To access the facility one can only assume that you pay up and/or join up. You agree to follow the rules of the private facility. You and I would follow those rules. But to the travellers they just do what they like, even if that means breaking into private property. They just do it...for a laugh...hahaha...fun
ny...not!

Most of us follow the rules, but it would seem the rules do not apply to travellers nor are the police interested in enforcing the laws of our land onto such people.

Oddly enough, if the three blokes were not travellers the article's headline would probably be "Three men arrested for gatecrashing "aqua zumba" at Worcester gym".

So please tell us all how trespassing is related to a drunken brawl? People are getting angry because the travellers are not being held to account for their actions. People are less angry about the brawl because people were and are being held to account for their actions.

Gate crashing a gym and jumping in a pool is no different to streaking at a sporting event. The event itself is completely harmless and would not have made the news apart from the fact our local paper is as racist against travellers as its readers. Face facts, we live in a backward City that is out of touch with the multicultural tolerant country we live in.
How did we go from a brawl to streaking at a sporting event?

I'm guessing you're itching to get your Lefty side into gear, the emotive language you use is the clue. And now you're falling back on that old Trotsky chestnut: Racist.

Some of us prefer Law & Order to come before tolerance and multiculturalism. Lefties exercised tolerance and multiculturalism in Rotherham, you are aware how that impacted 1400 kids? Yes? No?

I propose that it is you sir who is out of touch. Out of touch with reality.

Again, jumping in a pool is not the same as molesting children. One is a crime and one is a prank where nobody got hurt. Hardly comparable.

I like many have a problem with anybody causing trouble in our city but this was just people messing about.

The only reason this made the papers is because it was travellers and the WN have a real problem with them. I work with a member of this gym who is gutted she wasn't there to see this happen. Sounded funny to me but I prefer to judge on actions rather than race.

Hang on, I didn't compare jumping into a pool to molesting kids? How on earth did you make that connection?

I did, however, write of the disastrous impact of tolerance and multiculturalism when put before Law and Order. I wrote that because you appear to be promoting tolerance and multiculturalism OVER Law & Order.

No, the reason this made the paper is because it's a demonstration of, once again, how certain sections of our so-called society are openly flouting the law and being a nuisance towards those who abide by the law. With the added insult of those who are supposed to enforce the law not doing their jobs.

Law and Order, do you believe in it? Or does it only apply to those who are not tolerant and not multicultural? Or should it apply to EVERYONE?

According to a C4 program years ago, many travellers have homes in Ireland. Being a 'traveller' is their business. They make money by not paying tax, sponging off the welfare state AND doing 'odd jobs' here and there. The result of those 'odd jobs' is rubbish dumped in and around countryside lanes.

As usual, the HMRC do nothing. Having no fixed address in the UK does have its benefits.

Olduncle many of these travellers do get the benefits, in fact agencies such as Age Concern were finding them to explain what they are entitled to. and their kids go to the front of school waiting lists and they use the hospitals and all facilities here in the UK, what they don't do is pay into society the same as ordinary and I will say DECENT law abiding folk. They are anti Law & Order. And yes they do have lovely Homes in Ireland and Europe.
So to their supporters on here please forward your names & Addresses so that these travellers you defend can come and park on your lawns for free, use your gardens for toilets, and leave you a pile of rubbish.

OK, you're the second person on this thread who has labelled 'travellers' as a 'race'. They are not Romas, you do know that don't you? They are simply business people of no fixed address who pay no taxes but in most cases are based from Ireland. Let me guess, the next thing you'll write is that murderes, rapists and paedos are a 'race' of people too? Just how far is this blatant Trotskyism going to go in this country?

But let us entertain your leftie notion that all these people want is 'planning permission' and just want to settle down. Well one of them has told us on this very thread that were are simply jealous people and that's because the travellers have lots of money. So why don't they buy a house or two? Plenty of houses up for grabs in Worcester. In fact, why don't they move into social housing?

But where would this planning permission be granted? On your street? Behind your home?

But lets say they do get 'planning permission' do you think they'll pay up for the land? We've seen travellers sieze land and get utilities installed, they'll pay for that, but not the land.

Their business model is based on 'travelling' that is how they make their money. The HMRC cannot keep up with them because it seems the travellers have it sussed, and we are indeed the mugs. The police can't touch them and they are indeed a law onto themselves. And why is that? No fixed addresss. However, all travellers will create a distraction which keeps the authorities at bay. Note how they create chaos to the point that the authorities are only interested in moving them on INSTEAD of investigating how they earn money and whether they pay taxes. It's very clever, and we fall for it everytime. They just rinse and repeat, they have it sussed.

It's not personal, it's just business but at everyone's expense.

The poor staff that are having to deal with these awful people, while trying to run a business and carry on as normal is completely and utterly unacceptable!
The stress the staff are under from the two surrounding businesses does not bare thinking about!
Would you like to do a 10 hour shift next to these vile people while trying to care for customers and staff? The answers probably no on alot if people' mind!
I can assure you the poor staff within the two businesses are doing alot more then the so called police, who just stand there and watch the caravans drive on!
These people are filthy, nasty horrible pieces of work making people who work for a living jobs completely impossible!
Its private land so a law should be put in place but no a court order is required and they just laugh in peoples faces at this!
I feel soso sorry for the staff trying to keep these two businesses running at this current time!!

Would you all Like the clean up the human waste amongst other things these dirty people ar leaving around these companies? Probably not no!

They should not be there! Then need to be moved, before even more decide to come along!

Well done to the two businesses for staying open to customers, while being under so Much pressure (because let's face it- these travellers are not the nicest of mannered), I just thought you deserved a bit if prase, as so many people will think its a walk in the park! I don't know how you lot have coped because I surly couldn't! WELL DONE!!!!!

I don't just don't understand how they can get away with the things they do, if it was me or you then action would be taken, there is a fine against not picking up "dogs mess" etc but its ok for them to mess everywhere and nothing be done? I don't understand why they are so untouchable they just seem to be able to do what they want, when they want and everyone else just have to put up with it.

As per previous comments I agree if you think you could cope, offer your lawns, drive ways, gardens etc and see if you still have the same view within a couple of hours never mind a few days later.
Quite simply because of 'no fixed address'. So what is there to take action against? As soon as the heat is turned up they vanish. They're not on the electoral role, they're no on credit scores...they are nowhere.

Amazing how Social Services don't even look into the schooling of the children?

But then again, our bloated public services are only interested in easy targets: law abiding tax paying citizens.

It would be interesting to see the reaction if the 3 rowdy teens disrupting the aqua zumba class and making a nuisance of themselves had not been travellers; I'm suspecting the general reaction would have been to blame the parents, give them community service or bring back national service, however as they were travellers some people seem to think they should be given carte blanche to do as they please and to hell with anyone else such as the 'pool full of obese women' whose right to peaceful enjoyment of a pre-arranged aqua zumba class pales into insignificance against the supposed right of the rowdy teenagers to spoil someone else's activity.

What the hell am I paying taxes for?

Why doesn't our government take whatever action it was the Irish government took (which I think involved locking up these TGBs) which led them to leave Ireland en masse and invade England in the first place? That was every community blighted by these illegal parasites would be free of the criminality, anti social behaviour, and general disruption they cause

Yawn! Not another trivial James Connell story about some trivial misdemeanour by Travellers to stoke up apocryphal hatreds by the usual correspondents.

Why doesn't James report on what some other ethnic groups are up to?

Oh, wasn't Winston Churchill one of the main exponents of the European Declaration on Human Rights, which came into UK law in 2001? Good old Winston. Seriously, he always knew what was best for humanity and Britain.

I don't get this idea that Irish Travellers are a race apart? They're Caucasian, like the majority of white Europeans. Their ethnicity is no different. At most they're a sub-culture.
