A MOSAIC put together by the community of St John's has finally been unveiled at the new-look high rise flats.

Pupils of St Clement's Primary School and Our Lady Queen of Peace, residents of St John's and residents living in the high rise flats all came together to paint the mosaic, which depicts the view seen from the top of Henwick House.

Malvern freelance mosaic artist, Victoria Harrison, came up with the design of the mosaic, and held workshops every Friday, starting in February, until it was painted.

Ms Harrison said: "I was creating four mosaic panels with a Mental Health Group when I was working at the Malvern Cube. I was visited by someone from Worcester Community Housing and we came up with the idea for it there.

"The first mosaic for Henwick House, which is of Worcestershire County Cricket Ground with a back drop of Worcester Cathedral, was inspired by me from my first visit to the roof top via the cage running up the outside of the building.

"The impact of the view was overwhelming, also, I wanted a design subject the community could relate to today, and for generations in the future.

"The project has been a great privilege to be part of, for not only myself, but also for the volunteers from the local community of St John's, the residents of the high rise and the school pupils, who can see their input in this creative piece of art.

"All age groups have come together, interacted with one another, learned new skills and will be part of a lasting piece of art."

The Garage Art Group worked with Ms Harrison to create the mosaic, along with Worcester Community Housing and building contractor Mears, which both help fund the project.

Nina Chinery, Head of Supported Housing at Fortis Living said: "The high rise blocks in St. John’s are iconic, so what better way to mark their multi-million pound transformation with a celebratory piece of artwork. It will sit on top of Henwick House for generations to come."

A second mosaic is now underway, which re-creates the image of a traditional canal boat on a Worcester waterway, planned to be installed at Severn House.

This project needs funding however.

Pat Richardson, of the high rise residents' group, said: "We are very proud of our iconic high rise homes and this project demonstrates the wonderful community spirit that exists across the three blocks, so we really hope we can raise the money we need."
