BUILDING work has begun to convert a former Worcester art college into a £6 million retirement complex.

The former Worcester College of Technology School of Art and Design in Barbourne Road closed in June, with courses to be moved to the former Russell and Dorrell building in Dolday.

Planning permission was granted the same month to revamp the building into 60 apartments for older people and work is now underway at the site.

Courses began at the St Dunstan's Building, which will be officially opened on Saturday, September 27, this month, with facilities including a purpose-built hair and beauty salon, art and design, textile and fashion studios.

The college was recently rebranded Heart of Worcestershire College as part of a merger with Bromsgrove's North East Worcestershire College.

The college's previous plans to rename itself Worcestershire College were blocked by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills after mid-Worcestershire MP Sir Peter Luff called the plans "an aggressive act" which would marginalise other institutions in the county.
