WORK is now underway on a controversial revamp of the market in Angel Place in Worcester.

The regeneration work, which will cost £555,000 and last 13 weeks, began on Tuesday and most of the market traders have been found a temporary home although some have expressed uncertainty about their role in the new-look market when it opens before Christmas.

Traders based at the market were offered temporary bases around Worcester during the work after Worcester City Council, heading up the scheme, announced initially they could find them nowhere to go before performing a seeming U-turn.

Shelley Cusack who runs the rug stall said she now wanted to let her customers know where the traders were based while the work continues.

The pet stall and one of the clothes stalls is in Bank Street, one clothes stalls is on the High Street by Dorothy Perkins, the rug stall is outside the Guildhall in the High Street next to the fruit and veg stall, the flower stall on the High Street outside Nationwide, the bag stall on the High Street opposite Dorothy Perkins, the mobile phone stall on Pump Street near Monsoon and the plant stall outside TK Maxx in the High Street.

Mrs Cusack said: "We just really need to tell everyone where the stalls are." She said although her stall was on a prime site she had lost trade because a lot of the market's regular customers used the Crown Gate car park or the bus station when she was trading in Angel Place. She said: "We have only run it in the new location for the last two days. We have to give it a week to see whether it's good or bad." She said it was 'great' they had been found a place on the High Street.

Work includes repaving with the cost being met jointly by the city council, Worcestershire County Council and Crown Estate, owners of CrownGate. Higher quality, flexible and moveable stands will be introduced.

A spokesman for Worcester City Council said: "The shops in Angel Place are still open for business and will continue to be open all through the work."
