THE director of music at Exeter Cathedral is returning to his county roots this weekend.

Andrew Millington returns to Worcester on Saturday for a recital on the organ of St Martin's Church on London Road as part of its International Artist Series.

Mr Millington grew up in Malvern Link and was a pupil at the King's School in Worcester, taking his first organ lessons with Worcester Cathedral musicians Christopher Robinson and Harry Bramma.

After taking up an organ scholarship at Cambridge he taught at Malvern College and now is one of England's most senior cathedral musicians.

Shirley Scott, administrator of Music at St Martin’s, said: “We've been looking for an opportunity to invite Andrew to St Martin's, and we're delighted that he is taking part in our International Artist Series of concerts given by world-class musicians.

"Our church is a comfortable and popular venue for concerts with a lovely acoustic and a splendid organ, which we're confident he will enjoy playing. He has chosen a varied programme of favourite organ music, including works by J S Bach, Elgar, Liszt, Messiaen and Vierne. The recital will be presented with a video screen.

“The next concert in the series, on October 18, will be given by top British lutenist David Miller who first appeared in St Martin’s during the Three Choirs Festival Fringe in 2005 in a joint recital with Arabic singer and oud player Abdul Salam Kheir. This time David presents Masters of the Lute — exquisite music from the 17th and 18th centuries, showcasing his stylish virtuoso playing on a variety of different instruments.”

The concert on Saturday begins at 7.30pm with a licensed bar available.

Tickets cost £10 for adults and accompanied under 16s free.
