EIGHT jobs are to be lost after administrators confirmed the Phones 4u store in Worcester High Street will not reopen.

However, it is good news for staff from the store in The Shambles, which is to carry on under the Vodafone banner - saving five workers.

Phones 4u plunged into administration last week after EE chose not to renew its contract, putting 5,600 jobs at risk.

The beleaguered retailer has been forced to close 362 stores, with the loss of nearly 1,700 jobs.

Other Worcestershire stores being saved by Vodafone include Bromsgrove and Evesham.

They will also be taking over the nearby Stourbridge store, however four people will lose their jobs with the closure of the Kidderminster shop.

EE have not taken on any Worcestershire stores.

Rob Hunt, joint administrator and PricewaterhouseCooper partner, said: “It is with much regret that we have today made the difficult decision to close a large number of stores.

"It is a very sad day for the staff working at those locations and our thoughts are with them.

"We will make every effort to help the affected staff, working with the Phones 4u HR team over the coming days to support employees."

All takeovers are subject to court approval which is due to take place shortly with the taken over stores opening as soon as next week.
