THE Bull Inn is quite simply a great place to eat. Its menu is cleverly devised, offering variety to suit all tastes, from simple fish and chips to more inventive dishes.
If your priorities are freshness, good quality, taste and value, then this pub hits the spot.
The decor is stylishly simple, providing an airy, spacious feel which is at the same time cosy. Generous-sized tables, spaced far apart, make for comfortable dining.
For starters, we opted to share after hearing the portion sizes were quite large. The olives arrived with a selection of breads and a delicious chilli-style dip. The baked field mushroom with courgette, Brie and balsamic dressing (£4.25) was full of fresh flavour - although it might have been better with a Stilton cheese.
For the main course, one of my guests opted for baked cod fillet wrapped in Parma ham with sun-dried tomatoes and a cream veloute (£11.50) - a gutsy combination of taste and texture.
The generous portion of fish was beautifully cooked and complemented the lovely sauce. This dish had bags of flavour.
Another guest opted for medallions of Herefordshire fillet of beef and tiger prawns with a mushroom sauce (£12.50). It was cooked as ordered and the sauce was richly flavoured; not too heavy or overpowering.
Another guest opted for mushroom and Herefordshire rump steak salad with a hot mustard dressing (£9.95).
This was an antidote to the stodgy excesses of Christmas but something to celebrate nonetheless with its tasty tender flavour.
I sampled traditional battered cod and chips (£6.95) from the pub's own fish and chip shop.
The generous portion of fish tasted extremely fresh, although the batter could have done with being crispier.
We really were tempted by the selection of homemade dessert treats on offer, but were simply too full to try any of them. Our evening at the Bull Inn was very enjoyable and we would definitely return.
