A TRAILER full of scrap metal caught fire on the M5 this morning, causing two lanes to be closed.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews from Upton and Worcester were called to the incident on the southbound carriageway between junction seven and eight at 5.40am.

The flames, which also engulfed part of the grass verge, were extinguished using two hose reels.

The Highways Agency praised the firefighters' efforts, tweeting "quick work from our colleagues" enabled two lanes to be re-opened promptly to  minimise disruption for commuters.
