A TEST for HIV is being offered in a bar in what is thought to be a groundbreaking scheme for Worcestershire.

Visitors to The Flag in Lowesmoor, Worcester, can take a free pinprick test for the disease which will deliver a result in 30 minutes.

The project launched on Monday (October 13) after a joint effort by the bar and The Worcester Foundation.

Owner Lee Winters said The Flag, which is the city’s dedicated lesbian, gay, bi and trans bar, was proud to open up tests to the community.

Mr Winters, 43, said: "There's always been stigma about testing.

"This is an amazing bit of kit and only takes about 30 minutes in total to get a result.

"It's useful for anybody and everybody really - they can just pop into the bar and have a test.

"Going for a test is always an anxious time, so getting it all done in half an hour is quite a revelation to be honest.

"To my knowledge we will be the only bar in Worcestershire doing it."

Testing will take place at The Worcester Foundation's office on Bath Road during the day and at The Flag on a walk-in basis from 7pm daily.

Mr Winters said the bar's offering was an addition to other healthcare services, is completely confidential and will be done by qualified staff.

"We're not trying to take away from the other services, it's a complement and support," he said.

"If someone hasn't got the time during the day then we will be open and available to do it."

The testing has started after The Flag raised £2,000 for The Worcester Foundation.
