WORK to resurface the M5 between junctions 9 and 8 has begun and is set to continue for two weeks.

The surface will be renewed across all three lanes of the northbound carriageway between junction 9 at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire and junction 8 at Strensham in Worcestershire.

The work will mean full overnight closures of the M5 northbound between 10pm and 6am.

Highways Agency project manager Purnima Kaul said: "The work will lead to an improved, smoother surface for road users and reduced traffic noise.

"To carry it out safely and efficiently we need to close the M5 northbound overnight. Road users should therefore allow extra time for their journeys."

Diversions will be in place during the closure so M5 northbound traffic will leave at junction 11 Cheltenham/Gloucestershire Airport and travel along the A40/A417 westbound to join the M50 at junction 2 at Ross-on-Wye, then travel east along the M50 to re-join the M5 at junction 8.

This is a diversion of 26 miles.

Any traffic that misses the diversion at junction 11 will be diverted off at junction 9 and redirected southbound back down the M5 to take the diversion at junction 11.
