A TREASURE trove of historical documents has been uncovered revealing the fascinating past of the Pheasant Inn at Welland.
The pub, which closed in 2010, was long thought to have been on the site since 1865, but the newly-discovered documents going back to the late 1700s demonstrate that an inn has been there for well over 200 years.
The documents are currently being catalogued by Welland resident Viv Nelson, who by coincidence lives in Pheasant Cottages, once owned by the pub.
She said: "We need help from a keen local historian here who can help us analyse the documents that give an insight into its fascinating past.
"The Pheasant is obviously of greater historic value than was previously thought and great care needs to be taken before any parts of this historic building are altered as is currently envisaged by developers."
The collection of documents include indentures, mortgage agreements, last wills and testimonies and a whole host of other legal documents going back over 220 years.
