THREE men wearing balaclavas and wielding crowbars forced open tills at Tesco in Evesham in the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday).

The armed robbery is similar to an attack on the St Peter's store in Worcester last month where three men forced entry into the closed store, threatened a staff member with a crowbar and also made off with cash from the self service tills.

Frightened staff at Evesham's Worcester Road superstore watched on in horror as the men, all wearing dark clothing and balaclavas, entered the 24-hour store between 12.35am and 12.40am while it was open to the public.

They used crowbars to force open the tills in the self scan area, placing money in a large holdall before exiting the store.

A police spokeswoman said they would not be revealing how much money was taken during the armed robbery.

The trio made off in a silver or grey coloured vehicle, which was driven in the direction of the Greenhill and Worcester Road junction.

Detective Inspector Andy Price, investigating the incident, said: “Thankfully nobody was injured during the incident.

"Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police take such offences very seriously and inquiries are ongoing to bring these offenders to justice and to protect people from harm."

The store remained open yesterday but the self service tills remained cordoned off.

A spokesman for the supermarket said they were glad nobody was injured during the robbery.

He said: "We’re relieved that nobody was hurt during this incident.
"It’s now a matter for the police and we’ll be helping them with their investigations in any way we can."

Det Insp Price urged anyone with information to call the non-emergency police number 101 quoting incident 16S of Tuesday 9 December.

He added: "“We are eager to hear from anyone who saw a car of this description in the area at the time.
