A LORRY crashed into a railway bridge causing delays to train services.

The vehicle struck the bridge in Brickfields Road, Worcester, at about 4pm on Monday, prompting Network Rail officials to check the site for structural damage.

Temporary speed restrictions on the train line were implemented while examinations were completed, but after twenty-five minutes a normal service was resumed.

Passengers travelling on the 3.49pm from Birmingham New Street to Hereford however were left frustrated by delays.

Their train was late running and then cancelled at Great Malvern.

One commuter Jane Symonds told the Hereford Times, a Worcester News sister title, “everything is wrong” with the service.

She said: "They do this so often. Nothing wrong with the money we pay them, everything wrong with the service."

Last week a lorry into another railway bridge on Tolladine Road, Worcester, for the second time in a month.

Bricks from the freight bridge were left on the road after the incident but no one was hurt.

Network Rail closed the line, used by freight trains, "as a precaution" and a bridge examiner went to judge the extent of the damage.

The Tolladine Road bridge had been previously struck by a lorry on Friday, November 21.
