ONCE again Worcester woke up to no snow after as much as 2cm was predicted but drivers have still been warned to take care on the roads during the cold snap because of ice.

Highways gritting and snow clearing teams were ready to respond to a possible 2cm of snow and sub-zero temperatures forecast in some higher areas of the county from midnight onwards last night.

'Back to black' snow ploughs were fitted to some of the gritters to clear and grit roads overnight.

However, despite the absence of the white stuff this morning drivers were warned to take care on the roads as the cold weather may hold other dangers.

Supt Kevin Purcell took to Twitter to urge drivers to show respect to those drivers who opted for caution.

He wrote: "It's one of those Brrrrrrr starts to the day! #DriveToArrive respect the cautious driver!"

West Mercia Police also issued a warning via Twitter about 'icy stretches on the roads'.

Cllr John Smith, county council cabinet member for Highways, said: "As always, the main thing for motorist to bear in mind is to never assume it's safe to travel at normal speeds even if you think a highway has been treated.

Snow and sleet obviously makes it more difficult for drivers so please don't take any risks."
