THE number of falls recorded in Worcestershire’s three major hospitals has fallen by 13 per cent in the past year.

Figures released by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust show 1,460 falls were recorded in Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Kidderminster Hospital and Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital in 2014, in comparison with 1,672 in 2013.

Of these, 30 resulted in the patient being seriously hurt in 2014, down from 37 the previous year.

A report presented at a meeting of the trust’s board on Wednesday, January 28 said the majority of patients suffering falls were those waiting to be either sent home or to a nursing home.

Although the greatest proportion of falls occurred in the Acute Medical Unit at the Alex, measures are being put in place to improve patient safety and a downward trend has been reported.
