HEALTH bosses in Worcestershire have urged people in the county not to take antibiotics if they are suffering with a cough, cold or the flu.

Despite 44 per cent of patients visiting their GP with cold or flu symptoms believing they need antibiotics, this type of medication is useless as they are viruses rather than infections caused by bacteria.

The best way to treat coughs, colds and sore throats is to drink plenty of fluids and rest. Over the counter medication such as paracetamol and ibuprofen may also help.

Head of medicines commissioning for Worcestershire’s three Clinical Commissioning Groups Jane Freeguard said: “By only using antibiotics when it’s right to do so, we can slow down resistance and make sure these life-saving medicines remain effective when we need them the most.

“We now know that most coughs and colds get better just as quickly without antibiotics. So if you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms drink plenty of fluids, rest and consult your pharmacist about medicines to help you with your symptoms.”
