AS parents across the nation found out which high school their children would be attending this September, more than 90 percent of children in Worcestershire gained a place at their first choice secondary school.

Figures revealed by Worcestershire County Council reveal that 93 percent of children, set to start year seven in September, got into the school that was their first preference.

Councillor Liz Eyre, cabinet member for children and families said: "I am very pleased that once again we were still able to offer first choice to over 90 per cent of applicants.

"For anyone who is not happy with their offer, there are still options available."

The county council received and made 5,500 applications for secondary school places, and it has been revealed that Tudor Grange, in Worcester, was the most popular choice as it was the most over-subscribed.

Along with Tudor Grange, Haybridge High School, in Hagley, and The Chantry, in Martley, were the two schools which were most over-subscribed.

3.25 percent secured places at their second school of preference, while 1 percent of the total were awarded places at their third preference.

151 children, 2.75 percent of the total, were offered places at a school they did not apply for, however, no children that were subject to a school place application were left without a high school place.

This year, 97 percent of all Worcestershire applications were made online, after the county council has been promoting this service for a number of years.

Herefordshire fared better than Worcestershire, with a total of 94.95 percent of students securing places at their first choice schools.

In stark contrast Birmingham only managed to secure first choice placements for 68.5 percent of applicants, while South Gloucestershire achieved 88.7 percent.

The nation's highest percentage was Cornwall, where 97.85 of applicants secured places at their first choice high school.

In stark contrast, the London Boroughs of Fulham and Hammersmith scored the lowest in the country, with only 55.02 percent of applications getting in at their first choice of schools

A number of schools across Worcestershire still have spaces left.
