NOW that the roles for an upcoming production of "Annie" have been filled, attention turned to dogs to audition for their part in the musical.

Seven canines strutted their stuff during the auditions to fill the role of Sandy and be a part of the show, which is being produced by amateur musical youth group Wodys.

Rachel Price, choreographer of Wodys, said: "We have had a great response to the roles for the dogs, it's great to see them all here. They're gorgeous.

"The dogs will be performing every night in front of a lot of people, so they need to consummate professionals."

Bentley, a five-year old golden retriever, did enough to win the part of Sandy.

Melanie Beattie, Bentley's owner, of Battenhall, said: "He's 'so laid back he's horizontal, but we are looking forward to seeing him make his stage debut."

Four year-old miniature labradoodle, Teddy, was penned in as Bentley's understudy.

Helen Thomson, Teddy's owner, said: "This could be his first first role, he just loves people.

"I know the role and the story very well and thought Teddy really looks the part to take it on."

Worcester's MP Robin Walker also popped along to the auditions, at St Marys Hall, Worcester, and has watched a number of Wodys' productions.

He said: "It looks like it's going to be another very good show and I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

"I've always been blown away by the productions, and I was very pleased to be there when Bentley was chosen to play Sandy."

61 children from across Worcester will fill the roles to bring the production to life, with Maisy Jones playing the role of Annie, in what has been hailed as a great community project.

Rachel said: "The auditions for the kids' roles went ahead in February, so that was sorted.

"It's a real community project, which is great, and everybody is looking forward to the play going ahead.

"Every single person involved is working hard, so we're all really excited."

The show is set to go ahead at Swan Theatre, from August 4 until August 8.
