A COLLECTION of spectacular paintings by landscape artist Stanhope Forbes has been brought together for the first time at a Worcester art gallery.

The Stanhope Forbes’ England exhibition at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum in Foregate Street and will bring together a series of paintings on loan from other museums, galleries and private collections across the country.

The centrepiece of the exhibition, which begins on Saturday, March 21 and runs until Saturday, June 6, is Chadding on Mounts Bay, which was first exhibited in Worcester in 1902 and was later bought for the city directly from the artist. It now spends much of its time touring international exhibitions but will return to the city for the exhibition.

The museum’s senior curator Philippa Tinsley said: “Chadding on Mount’s Bay is considered Stanhope Forbes’ greatest work and is a jewel in Worcester’s collection.

“This exhibition brings together a fascinating selection of other landscapes by Stanhope Forbes from public and private collections to tell the story of this important artist”.

Stanhope Forbes was born in Dublin in 1857 and studied in both London and Paris, but it was the picturesque villages of England which captured his imagination. The exhibition presents his ideal of the British landscape in a time of great social and environmental change.

Visitors interested in finding out more about the artist are also invited to two talks about his life and work at the gallery on Tuesday, April 14 and Tuesday, May 12. Both start at 1pm.

Entry to the exhibition is free and the gallery is open between 10.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Saturday, except Bank Holidays. For more information call 01905 25371 or visit www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk.
