LESSONS are being learned from a report into a harrowing series of incidents at a maternity department in Cumbria to ensure babies and mums in Worcestershire are given the best possible care.
A report into the deaths of 19 babies and women at the unit at Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness between 2004 and 2013 concluded the unit was “dysfunctional” and found “serious failures of clinical care”.
The report by Dr Bill Kirkup, which was published earlier this month and said at least 11 babies and one mother died unnecessarily due to failings at the unit, set out a series of 44 recommendations for NHS as a while to avoid a repeat of the incident, which are being put into place in Worcestershire.
The women and children division of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Kidderminster Hospital and Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital – is reviewing the report and is expected to have an action plan in place by June.
