HUNDREDS of primary school children descended on RGS Worcester to take part in a competition as part of British Science Week.

Forty-one teams from 23 Worcestershire primaries schools battled it become the 'Eggstravaganza' champions at the event testing design and engineering skills.

Teams had one hour to design and build a crane tower, which could support the weight of a creme egg, using straws, tape and pipe cleaners, clay and string.

Martley CE Primary School won the prize for the tallest tower, Claines CE Primary School for the best design and Northwick Manor Primary School displayed the best teamwork.

Shena Chilvers from Martley, said: "The Eggstravaganza was a fantastic event.

"The children had to think on their feet and consider options, not something they always have time for in the classroom.

"The event was so well organised – congratulations to the team at RGS."

Dr Howard Smith, head of science at RGS Worcester, said: "It is very important that science is enjoyable for people of all ages, and part of my team’s role is to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

"This challenge allowed pupils to collaborate, share their ideas and produce a design for a specific task, which mirrors the best in science research at a higher level, which this country excels at."
