SHOPPERS in Worcester will get an early Easter boost this year, with the news that Aldi is opening its first store in the Faithful City.

The cut-price supermarket chain has finalised a date for the opening of a new store on the old Courts furnishing shop in Pheasant Street, near Lowesmoor.

The site, which was given approval by the city council last year, will open its doors on Thursday, March 29.

Neil Haynes, Aldi store operations manager for the region, said: "Final preparations are well under way for the grand opening.

"The new store in Worcester will be one of Aldi's concept stores, which is bigger, brighter and better to shop in.

"As well as having more space, it will have a simple layout which will make it easier for customers to find their way around, making the whole shopping experience more enjoyable."

The confirmation of the grand opening comes days after a new Asda was confirmed for Lowesmoor, as well as 13 shops, 10 apartments, office space and a restaurant.

The vision of a new Aldi started to become reality last August, when the city council removed an order which prevented the building being used to sell food.

The opening hours of the new Aldi will be from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 8pm on Saturdays, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

For a city the size of Worcester the choice for food shopping has been strictly limited with two Tescos and 2, what can only be called mediocre, Sainsbury's compared with other towns with Superstores. Competition can only benefit the customer and hopefully improve customer service. I live near Warndon Tescos and what was interesting that when we had the snow the other week, their car park was treacherous as no snow had been cleared whilst Lidls car park was completely clean! I rest my case

Aldi comes to Worcester?! Really, that's fantastic news - in fact the greatest news I've heard from the faithful city all year- maybe even since the Millennium. I used to shop in Sainsbury's in the city centre and then I couldn't decide between that or the two Tesco in the city or the other Sainsbury's in Blackpole. When we have Aldi all my shopping dilemmas will be resolved and my life will be complete!
