YOUNGSTERS at a Worcester primary school are benefiting from a new zebra crossing.

Work to put a zebra crossing outside Gorse Hill Primary School in Tolladine has been finished by Worcestershire County Council.

A decision to build the new crossing followed requests from parents and pupils from the Hollymount Road school, and public consultation showed 93 per cent of those who responded were in favour of the £30,000 project.

Worcestershire's cabinet member for the environment councillor Derek Prodger, said: "By installing the crossing we are persuading more people to walk by giving greater priority to pedestrians who cross Hollymount Road.

"The route is particularly well used by children travelling to and from the school, as well as the local community."

And local county councillor Jo Hodges, added: "We are all very pleased the works have been completed and the safety of children crossing Holly Mount Road during school hours and also when out-of-school activities are taking place, has been improved."

Gorse Hill Primary headteacher Vivienne Cranton said she was very pleased because one of their school objectives was to extend pedestrian training, which they could now do thanks to the new zebra crossing.
