A TEACHER who had to fight for his life following a horrific car crash is back at his Worcester home.

Robert Young, aged 29, suffered a broken pelvis and ribs, and a punctured lung in the crash last October - and was in a coma for almost a week.

Mr Young, from St Peter's, spent three months at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham followed by just over a month at the neurological unit at Moseley Hall Hospital where he started speech therapy.

The head of information technology at Walkwood Middle School in Redditch is now an outpatient at a rehabilitation unit in Worcester.

Assistant headteacher Bob James said it was good news and they were all happy that he was finally home.

Mr James said: "Things are looking up now he is out of hospital and we were all really excited about it. It's such a big step for him to take.

"He has still got quite a bit of therapy to go, particularly memory and speech. But he is getting there. But I think it may be six months to a year before he is back at work."

Mr Young was driving his red Ford Ka home on the Droitwich to Hanbury Road when it was in collision with a green Toyota Land Cruiser.

Members of the Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS), which is based in Bromsgrove, were close by helped him at the roadside.

The school will be hosting an evening of entertainment in support of MARS on Friday, April 20, and tickets are now on sale.

The event is open to over 18s only and starts at 7.30pm.

A raffle is also being held to raise money, and prizes include a mountain bike, tickets to see Fame and a signed Birmingham City football shirt.

Raffle tickets and tickets for the event are available by contacting Nick Roberts at Walkwood Middle School on 01527 543361.
