DRAMA students at the University of Worcester narrowly lost out on the chance to go to a national drama festival.

The actors and actresses were hoping their performance of Martin McDonaugh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane would win them chance to perform at the Sunday Times National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough in April. They failed to make it, but director Gerald Turner, who was a professional actor for 25 years and had roles in more than 100 screenplays, as well as playing Gregory Salt in The Archers for 12 years, said he and the students were still pleased they had made it into the top 20 of all performances.

"There were 160 entries, so to make it to the last 20 was great," he said. "It is the best we've ever done and fantastic considering we were up against actors from places like the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. "I think we've done extremely well."
