A BRITISH Red Cross (BRC) volunteer is getting ready to walk more than 1,100 miles to raise awareness of the organisation's life-saving work.

Andrew Spreadbury, aged 41, of Stourport, will walk 15 miles a day, from Land's End to John O'Groats, to raise cash and aw-areness for the British Red Cross Save A Life first aid course.

Accompanying him on the solo trek will be ResusciAnnie - the dummy used by first aiders when learning how to resuscitate.

Mr Spreadbury said: "I think it's going to be quite an adventure and I'll be meeting lots of people on the way. I will also see a lot of Britain. That's one of the reasons why I'm taking ResusciAnnie as a way to raise people's awareness."

The idea for the walk, which he will start on Tuesday, March 20, started off as a joke between the former army medic and his friends last September but he is now putting the finishing touches to the route plan.

He hopes to organise rest-stops at BRC centres along the way, where he plans to coincide visits at their two-hour Save A Life first aid sessions, held throughout the country.

The Buttermere Road man got his medical training during service in both the regular and territorial armies, joining the Stour-port-based volunteer Red Cross team in 1995. People wishing to sponsor Spreadbury's walk can do so by logging on to www. islandodyssey.co.uk
