David Jones is the first recruit in three years to join the ranks of Ledbury's retained firefighters. Although Mr Jones works full-time for Ledbury Plumbing and Bathrooms Ltd, his public-spirited employers have agreed to allow him to respond to emergencies during his working day.
The firm's partners Andrew Williams and Stuart Ovington say that although they only employ a small number of staff, they are happy to support an essential community service.
Mr Jones is now on call, having just completed phase one of his training, totalling 16 days. He said: "I have greater awareness of health and safety, first aid and fire safety, which I can transfer to my full time job."
Keith Wildig, the officer in charge at Ledbury station said: "I would like to thank Ledbury Plumbing and Bathrooms Ltd for releasing David for firefighting duties." Pictured right is David Jones in his firefighting uniform.
