YOUNG cancer patients in Worcestershire are to get a new champion' - a dedicated cancer nurse who will look after their interests.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust hopes to fill the newly created post in a few weeks' time after a successful bid for £40,000 of funding for the next two-and-a-half years from CLIC Sargent, the UK's leading children's cancer charity.

The lead nurse will provide advice on the care and treatment of young cancer patients from across the county as well as developing training plans for other members of staff and building links with Birmingham Children's Hospital, which provides specialist cancer treatment for some local youngsters.

They will also work with the Orchard Service, which provides nursing care at home for children with long-term conditions.

The trust's general manager for women and children's services, Lynn Takavarasha, said: "Securing this level of funding will be enormously useful to us in our efforts to improve the care we provide for children and young people with cancer.

"There's very stiff competition for funding from CLIC Sargent, and I'm delighted our bid impressed them enough for us to be awarded the maximum support.

Jane Lewis, of CLIC Sargent, said: "We're very pleased to be working with the team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust to develop this new post.

"It is intended to help implement the guidelines for services for children and young people with cancer, who can often feel very isolated. This is a way of ensuring treatment can be provided both as safely and as locally as possible."
