CLASSIC cars of yesteryear are set to be displayed in Droitwich next month as the town holds a special vintage vehicle rally.

The Droitwich Spa Classic and Vintage Car Rally will take place in the town centre on Saturday, April 14, from 2-4pm.

Droitwich town councillor Anne Taft, one of the event's organisers, said she hopes it will attract many people from throughout the county and beyond.

She said: "This is a cross-party idea and the event should be a splendid day for not only the people of Droitwich but visitors to the town. We hope it will be a memorable day for all those who visit and a very successful event."

The rally is being sponsored by Kandahar, which manages Droit-wich's shopping precinct.

It is also being supported by Excel, Droitwich town and Wychavon district council and is suitable for all age groups to enjoy. The rally is free, but participants will be making a contribution to the County Air Ambulance.

"We look forward to seeing as many visitors as possible on the day," said Coun Taft.

She said 126 cars have entered the rally so far, but there was still time for other vintage car owners to show off their vehicles.

The High Street and St Andrew's Street will be closed for the occasion and some cars will be on display in Salters shopping precinct and the Raven Hotel car park.

Droitwich Canal Trust will also be participating by organising boat rides on the canal from Vines Park.

Meanwhile, the Raven Hotel will be offering visitors special rates for an overnight stay on Friday or Saturday evening.

Organisers hope the event will also boost trade in the shops, market stalls, pubs and restaurants in the town.

If anyone is interested in participating, they should contact Coun Taft on 07811 461617.
