CHILDREN at a village primary school had a visit from a man wielding a sword.

No call to the police though, because it was the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Sir Anthony Winnington, who arrived at Clifton Primary School in a 1934 London taxi accompanied by his wife, Lady Alexandra Winnington, for one of his first official engagements since his appointment.

Sir Anthony, dressed in full ceremonial uniform complete with sword, was greeted by head teacher Cathryn Throup and chairman of school governors, Chris Hurley, in front of more than 60 pupils.

After a tour of the school, during which he explained the history, role and duties of a High Sheriff to the children, Sir Anthony said: ā€œIā€™m delighted to visit my local primary school as my first official engagement to explain the role of High Sheriff over the last 1,000 years. The children were particularly interested in my sword and in the stories of Robin Hood. It was a pleasure to see such a thriving school in this lovely rural community.ā€
