PATIENTS and staff at Worcestershire’s new oncology centre were treated to a spectacular sight as representatives from a Malvern motoring company visited in a pair of hand-built sports cars.

Representatives from Morgan Motor Company – along with a gleaming red Plus 8 car and a spotless cream 4/4 model – visited the centre to hand over a £1,600 donation on Wednesday, April 29.

The company raised the money at a special ‘Sunday Service’ event arranged by motoring enthusiast website PistonHeads at the factory in Pickersleigh Road on Sunday, April 19, where visitors paid £10 a head to enjoy a spin in one of the company’s spectacular cars.

Morgan managing director Steve Morris said the company had chosen the new £22.5 million centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as its official charity this year and would be carrying out more fundraising activities throughout the year.

“Every year we support a local and a national charity,” he said. “With the oncology centre opening this year we thought it was a fitting charity to support.

“It will help so many people so we hope we can help out”.

He added he was grateful to everyone who came along to the event earlier this month and chipped in to raise the impressive figure in less than four hours.

“We always enjoy hosting passionate enthusiasts such as the PistonHeads community and I would like to thank all those that attended for their generosity and for helping to make the day a success,” he said.

“I am pleased that we were able to raise so much for the new Oncology Centre on the day.

“Thank you again to all those that donated in support of a great cause.”

The centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital started taking patients in January and was officially opened by the Princess Royal on Monday, April 13.

Although the centre is being backed by Morgan, it is hoped its opening will mean cancer patients in the county, who previously had to drive to Coventry, Cheltenham or Wolverhampton for treatment, will be able to leave their cars at home.

Macmillan lead cancer nurse at the centre Anne Sullivan said she and her colleagues were extremely grateful for the donation and the support of Morgan.

“We know with their help we can continue to improve on the excellent services provided to our patients at the new Oncology Centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital,” she said.

“Since opening its doors in January this year the centre has made countywide cancer services more accessible than ever before.

“It has allowed us to bring more cancer services into the county and we envisage it saving patients, their families and their carers an estimated one million miles of travel every year."
