NEARLY £7,000 has been donated by local people to the quake-stricken country of Nepal after two collections in Malvern over the weekend.

The Rotary Club of Colwall raised £1,504 in just one day, collecting in Church Walk in the town centre, a result that thrilled members.

Sarah Grout, on behalf of the club, said the money will be used to buy ShelterBoxes, containing vital survival supplies, for the quake victims. She said: "We are thrilled to report that the collection raised £1,504. Three ShelterBoxes will be purchased immediately."

She said that the collection has been supplemented by a contribution from the Downs School in Colwall, which held performances and cake sales, raising nearly enough for three more ShelterBoxes."

This fundraising, along with the takings from other collecting tins at sites in Colwall and Malvern, brings the estimated total sum raised to around £3,400. Donations can still be left at Malvern Party and Balloons in Church Walk.

"We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the residents of Malvern, Colwall and surrounding areas for their immediate response and unbelievable generosity," she said.

Over in the retail park at Malvern Link, Malvern Hills Lions Club spent Friday and Saturday collecting outside Marks and Spencer.

Club spokesman Geoff Lewis said: "Thanks to the generosity of those that visited the store £1,682 was collected over the two days. Another £460 in donations has been received by the club's treasurer for this appeal. Money from the club's funds will also be added to these two amounts to bring the total being donated to £2,500."

The money will go towards the Lions Club nation push to supply water purification equipment and tablets to Nepal, where more than 7,500 people are known to have died following the earthquake. The club estimates that the equipment already airlifted will enable 13 million litres of water to be purified.

Mr Lewis said that at always, Lions Club policy is that every penny they collect will go to the cause, with none being wasted on administration.
