AS PART of this week’s Deaf Awareness Week people with hearing problems are being reminded to make sure they have effective smoke alarms in place.

An estimated one million adults in the UK are unable to hear an ordinary smoke alarm, but a number of specialist alarms are available with features including strobe lighting or vibration.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service Station Commander Alan Haley from the service’s community risk department said it was important people with hearing problems make sure they have the right smoke alarms and test them regularly.

“Many people with hearing loss could be at serious risk if they don’t have the right alarm in place,” he said.

“A specialist alarm system provides valuable time to escape from a house blaze.

“Without it, lives could be lost.”

People with hearing problems may be eligible for a free home fire safety check. For more information call 0800 032 1155 or visit www.hwfire.org.uk.
