THERE was a spring in the step of schoolchildren who gave up their Bank Holiday Monday to raise money for Headway Worcestershire.

Over 160 children from King's School Worcester St Alban's walked five miles from Hawford to Diglis to fundraise for the acquired brain injury charity based in Gregory's Mill Street, Barbourne.

In total, the school had more than 1,000 walkers with the senior school, who started from Droitwich, fundraising for Help for Heroes and King's Hawford raising money for Blue Cross.

The sun was shining as the young walkers and their families made their way along the canal with Mel Akers, Headway chief executive, and service user Rob Young welcoming them back.

Mr Young, who was a teacher before he had a car crash, had taken part in an assembly with the children ahead of the walk.

Rachel Duke, deputy head at King's St Alban's, said it was a lovely day.

"I think what really inspired the children to take part is having spoken to someone with a head injury who seemed perfectly well.

"It helped them understand there's lots of things that a person could have which can't be seen.

"It particularly brought home the message about protecting your head when on your bike or scooter.

"The children had given up their Bank Holiday which is precious family time to take part which was extra special.

"Parents walked alongside their children which made it a really big community event."

She added they were still collecting sponsorship money and believed it would be a substantial amount.
