YOUNGSTERS from Defford First School were thrilled to be awarded the most innovative display award for their display at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.

The children prepared alpine gardens to the theme of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, forest school and natural alpines.

Jennifer Robinson, oak class teacher, said: "We were really excited by the prospect of working with the Alpine Garden Society.

"As part of our topic work we linked Alpine Flora to our curriculum studies for geography and science.

"This was a great opportunity for the children to learn about these amazing plants.”

Noah McCormick, aged 7, said: "I really enjoyed taking part in the Alpine Project I didn’t know anything about alpines and I’ve learnt a lot.

"Planting the troughs was quite hard because there were lots of things that we had to put in them, but it was lots of fun."

Marla Payne, aged 9, added: "Visiting the RHS Malvern Spring Show was interesting because we got to see other schools’ entries and the amazing show gardens and flowers."
