A CHARITY single in memory of a Worcester dad who died of cancer is set to be released.

The version of Electric Light Orchestra's Mr Blue Sky was recorded in memory of Battenhall dad Nigel Collinson.

Mr Collinson was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in September 2013, and died 12 weeks later – just two days after his 45th birthday.

His youngest son Charlie, seven, came up with the idea of recording the track as it was a family anthem and one of his father's favourites.

Charlie and his brother Henry, 11, are both pupils at King’s St Alban’s.

The recording of the song took place at the school and all 223 students and members of staff took part.

The brothers' mum Tracey, aged 48, said the family were hoping the project would raise a significant sum for Cancer Research UK.

She said: "I'm overwhelmed by how everyone at the school has embraced the whole project.

"All the sixth formers are walking around singing the song.

"It seems to have taken over the whole school and it's so uplifting.

"I really want people to know that no matter what comes along and hits them you can always do something positive.

"That's what Nige was like, he was always a very happy, positive, dignified man – and so strong.

"That's what I hope will come through with the boys."

The song will be officially released on Friday (June 12), with a launch party at the King's School.

It will be available to download from Monday, June 15 on iTunes.

Its release date is intended to make it an ideal gift for Father's Day, with the hope that it will celebrate dads everywhere.

Mrs Collinson said: "Nige was so incredibly supportive and a huge inspiration to many.

"This recording is a fitting tribute to him and something I know he'd be as proud of as we are – this is a truly amazing achievement by all involved."

The disc will be on sale for £5, with all proceeds going directly to Cancer Research.

There are only 750 copies of this disc available for purchase in Worcester.

It will be stocked at Tesco St Peter's, Roots of Rushwick, independent record store Rise, Flat White Coffee Company, No.25 Boutique and Tunnells opticians.
