A PRIMARY school in Worcester has been rated good across the board by Ofsted – just three years after being in special measures.

Oasis Academy Warndon – formerly Warndon Primary – was praised by inspectors after a visit last month.

Principal Matt Meckin said he was "delighted" the schools watchdog had recognised Oasis was "a good school that is improving all the time".

The school was congratulated by Ofsted for its excellent leadership, engaging teachers, innovative curriculum and happy and well behaved pupils.

Former Suckley Primary head Mr Meckin was appointed at the beginning of 2014 and pledged to turn Oasis around, promising "a steep trajectory of improvement".

The academy was put into special measures in September 2011, then ranked as requiring improvement in a subsequent inspection in early 2013.

Inspectors found since taking on the post, Mr Meckin had led staff in "completely transforming the quality of the academy’s education and pupils’ subsequent achievement".

There was praise for the academy’s introduction of an innovative assessment and tracking system to closely monitor children’s attainment, while the school’s teaching and support staff were complimented.

The inspection report highlighted a strong teamwork ethic that creates a culture of good behaviour and improving achievement.

It also reserved praise for the fact that "a number of pupils who have had substantial emotional or behavioural difficulties have greatly improved their conduct and their well-being thanks to a specific programme introduced to help them".

The academy joined the Oasis group of academies in October 2013.

Mr Meckin said: "Within our academy and the wider community it is common knowledge that Warndon is a good school that is improving all the time, so I am delighted that Ofsted have now independently confirmed this.

"When I arrived last year it was clear to me that there was so much potential for excellence, and now the staff, children and parents are proving it.

"Credit must go to the teachers who are determined to provide the best possible learning environment for their pupils, and as a team they have raised standards and the expectations the pupils have of themselves.

"In our academy the children feel safe and happy, and are therefore in a position to make terrific academic progress.

"They should be extremely proud of their school and the achievements they have made.”

"We now look forward to continuing on this exciting and natural journey to becoming an outstanding academy, providing the children of our community with an exceptional education."

In order to be rated outstanding, the school needs to ensure levels of teaching are outstanding throughout and can challenge the most able pupils.

The school is holding its annual fete on Saturday (June 20) between 1pm and 3pm.
