ONE of British Athletics' star names will be heading to Worcester for the second edition of a 10km run.

Jo Pavey, the current 10,000m European Champion, has signed up for the Worcester City 10k on Sunday, September 20.

Supermum Jo had an incredible 2014 with a bronze in the Commonwealth Games 5,000m, gold in the European 10,000m and third in the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year - all while getting back to her best after the birth of her second child.

She has her sights set on getting to the 2016 Olympics and is planning to enjoy running this year.

Jo said: "I'm really excited about running in Worcester, I've been told what a great event it was last year with an amazing atmosphere, big crowds and a scenic course.

"It's going to be a great day out for the whole family."

Last year RGS Worcester student Jenny Nesbitt won the women's race, beating running legend Paula Radcliffe.

Jo, aged 41, said she is looking forward to meeting the young pretender.

"I was impressed to hear how Jenny ran last year.

"I'm getting towards the end of my career and to hear about young athletes coming through is exciting for me as I want the future of British distance running to be bright.

"Jenny is a young talent coming through and she'll want to defend her title."

Jo said the 10km distance is one which people can build towards even if they are starting out running from scratch.

"It's great to have a target and there's still time to enter," she said.

"The thing about a 10k is it's an achievable distance for beginners but is also good for faster club athletes.

"What's great about this is you will have a goal and that's very motivating and gives you something to aim for."

Steve Cram, founder and organiser of the Worcester City Run, said: "Jo is a genuine inspiration on so many levels.

"She is still competing at the very top level in her 40s, which is fantastic, and she does so with a wonderful attitude.

"Her story has really struck a chord with the British public and demonstrates to women – and men – that age doesn’t have to be a barrier to great running performances.

"Once again, Jo is running really well this year and although the Worcester City 10K isn’t her main target for the season, we still expect her to be at the sharp end of the field on September 20."
