BISHOP Perowne CE College hosted primary school students whose second language is English at a special around the world themed arts and crafts day.

Pupils from Hollymount Primary School, Northwick Manor Primary School, St George’s CofE Primary School and Cranham Primary School took part in a number of activities on Wednesday, July 1, which included travelling to famous sites around the world thanks to green screen film technology.

Participants learnt to play Brazilian samba music, created Australian sand art, took part in a Norwegian drama lesson, tried to solve Roman, Egyptian and Greek codes and learnt Japanese origami.

At the end of the day every student took home a typically British bread and butter pudding, which they made themselves, and were presented with a small commemorative token designed by Bishop Perowne CE College’s English as an additional language department.

Mark Pollard, headteacher at Bishop Perowne CE College, said: “The primary school students all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the activities and, as their guides for the day were Bishop Perowne CE College English as an additional language department students, our visitors were able to get answers to any questions that they have from someone in their position.

“Making the leap to secondary school is daunting in itself, but there can be added pressure when English is a student’s second language.

"Therefore these types of days are extremely important in ensuring that every student coming to our school feels at ease and is able to take advantage of our endeavour forever philosophy.”
