A KEEN fundraiser and supporter of the Stroke Association is aiming to reach the £10,000 milestone for the charity this year.

Charlie Hodges, 73, of Worcester, lost his wife Margaret to a stroke 12 years ago and started fundraising for the Stroke Association when he asked for donations for his 70th birthday rather than presents.

He then lost his mother Betty to a stroke in 2013 and has supported the Stroke Association ever since.

Mr Hodges and his team of helpers have so far raised more than £7,000 for the charity and are hoping to raise another £3,000 by Christmas.

He said: “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m really determined.

"The Stroke Association is a wonderful charity which helps so many stroke survivors across the UK to adjust to their life after a stroke.

"From race nights to sponsored walks to fish and chip nights to dances, I’ve done it all.

"I’m really focused to reach this milestone in my fundraising to help conquer strokes. I want to say a big thank you to the local community for being so supportive at each of my events.”

Claire Benfield, fundraiser for the Stroke Association, added: “Charlie is truly inspirational.

"We owe big thanks to Charlie for choosing to support the Stroke Association.

"We are a charity that relies on people like Charlie to raise funds and the money raised will go a long way in helping to prevent strokes and reduce their effect through campaigning, education and research.”

Mr Hodge's next event is a family fun day at Ombersley Cricket Club on Friday, August 21, from 5pm. The family event will include live entertainment from crooner Matthew Long, a barbecue and buffet, fairground games, a raffle and lots more.

Tickets cost £6 which includes food.
