A WORKSHOP on the importance of orchards to Worcestershire’s wildlife will be held in Cleeve Prior, near Evesham, next month.

Gary Farmer from Vale Landscape Heritage Trust will lead the workshop at Field Barn in Evesham Road on Tuesday, September 8.

The workshop will explain the work of the Three Counties Traditional Orchard project, which has been working to protect nature and wildlife across the Evesham area since December last year.

Mr Farmer said: "The Vale was once full of orchards – large commercial orchards, small holder orchards and garden orchards – all supplying fruit for both industry and for local people.

“But many have been lost and many more are neglected.

“That's a huge loss since traditional orchards are fantastic places for wildlife, as well as for people.

“This will be a chance to find out where to look for wildlife, what to look for, and how to attract wildlife into an orchard.

“The session will be informal and hands-on and anyone with an interest in nature, in orchards, or both, is welcome to come along.''

The Three Counties Traditional Orchard project is working to train volunteers to preserve 39 separate orchards in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Places at the workshop, which will run from 10am until 3.30pm, are free but must be booked in advance by calling 01684 560 616 or emailing khumphries@worcestershire.gov.uk.
