FAMILIES can journey back in time as Witley Court holds a series of fun Victorian events this weekend.

The packed programme promises a "good time" for all, enabling children and adults alike to get hands on with history.

One hundred years ago Witley Court in Great Witley was one of England's great country houses before a disastrous fire in 1937 turned it into a "spectacular ruin" - but the events this Bank Holiday weekend will bring its heyday back to life.

The court has hosted a series of events and activities throughout August which reaches its finale on August 30 and 31 with a Victorian fete, featuring stalls and a travelling sideshow.

Jenny Davie, event manager at Witley Court, an English Heritage site, said: “In its day Witley was the place to be to have a good time — and this summer we will be bringing some of that partying spirit back.

“Our summer-long series of events gives young time-travellers the chance to experience some Victorian pursuits in a beautiful setting.

"I’m really excited about our Victorian fete and travelling show. It’s a brand new event with lots of colourful characters and things to do — and should be a suitably fitting finale to our summer of jolly good fun.”

From 11am, the Theatre of Past Delight will perform music and a Mr Punch vs the Tzar of Russia show will commence at 11.30am.

From midday people can learn about the workings of a Victorian household and a flea circus will entertain people of all ages.
