FIRST aid charity St John Ambulance is running a number of events throughout Worcestershire teaching people how to be lifesavers.

As part of its Save a Life September campaign volunteers from the charity will be on hand at Redditch’s Kingfisher Centre on Saturday, September 5, Riverside in Evesham on Monday, September 7 and the Three Counties Showground in Malvern on Wednesday, September 9.

Representatives will also be on hand during the Malvern Hill Challenge walk in aid for Help for Heroes on Saturday, September 12, at the Transport Museum in Chapel Lane, Wythall, near Redditch, on Saturday, September 19 and Angel Place in Worcester on Monday, September 28.

All events run from 9am until 5pm except on September 12, which will run from 10am until 6pm. Redditch MP Karen Lumley will attend the event on September 5 while her counterpart from Worcester Robin Walker will take part on September 28.

The month-long campaign, now in its fifth year, aims to equip people throughout the country with lifesaving first aid skills.

The charity’s community training co-ordinator for St John Ambulance in the West Midlands Emma Elgerton said: “First aid is for everyone and it’s easy and fun to learn.

“We believe that everyone should have first aid knowledge – and the more people that take part in Save a Life September the higher the chance that someone will be on hand to help when it’s needed most.”

The campaign has also won the backing of comedian Rufus Hound, who is appearing in a video produced by the charity as a hapless teacher whose lack of first aid skills leads to disastrous consequences for his pupils.

The 36-year-old comedian said: “St John Ambulance is a tremendous organisation and working with them has been super fun.

“I’m delighted to be supporting Save a Life September.

“Although the campaign video is funny, the message behind it is serious – it’s never too late to learn how to save a life.

“Everyone should visit the St John Ambulance website, find their nearest free first aid demo and learn the skills that could one day rescue someone close to them."
