A WORCESTER businesswoman says she is working to set up a separate Worcester Carnival event for next year.

As reported in your Worcester News, the Worcester Carnival returned on Monday after 15 years.

Despite carnival chairman Malvin Hobbs saying the event suffered some setbacks such as bad weather and being unable to use floats, and some members of the public branding the carnival "a disappointment", he said he is determined to bring the carnival back "bigger and better" next year.

However, Isobel Newport, who runs HR Help Team, a consultancy company, announced on Tuesday that she would be organising another carnival for next year, called Worcester Carnival 2016.

Ms Newport said she is "putting in place" a team of "skilled professionals and community members" to run a separate Worcester Carnival event.

She said: "Many people feel let down by this year's carnival.

"The most important thing with next year's event is that it truly represents the community and provides a day of family friendly fun and entertainment and most importantly generates funds for local charities — this is ever more important during times of austerity.

"Let's make Worcester Carnival 2016 one to be proud of.

"We know that organising a large scale event takes lots of time, volunteers and money which is why we will be starting planning immediately and would welcome companies who would like to sponsor the new event, charities that would like to be involved, and most importantly volunteers."

Although Ms Newport said she has "not ruled out" working with the organisers of the existing Worcester Carnival committee, Mr Hobbs said his Worcester Carnival is in no way affiliated with the new carnival.

"Worcester Carnival committee has not been rebranded or reformed as another group. We have 20 people on our committee at the moment and we are securing sponsorship for next year's festival."

Chris Jaeger, the chief executive of Worcester Live, said: "Malvin and his team did their best with the carnival this year and I'm sure it will be ten times better next year. I would not be interested in working with a rival carnival group while I am working with the Worcester Carnival committee."
