POLICE are looking in to footage which shows children playing in the road in Pershore.

On Wednesday your Worcester News reported on a video captured by Worcester woman Sandra Rowland, which shows children playing in the Newlands road, one of which is almost hit by a car.

Following the story, people took to social media to say this was a regular occurrence along the road, with children often seen throwing things at cars and playing in the road.

Speaking today, Inspector Janet Heritage said that after viewing the video on the Worcester News website, police are working with the children and their family.

Insp Heritage said: "We have viewed the (video) and are aware of it. The safety of the children is paramount and we are taking positive action to ensure that they stay safe. We have already spoken with the children's mother and are also working with other agencies."

Superintendent Kevin Purcell, the policing commander for South Worcestershire, Tweeted a link to the story, commenting that it was "one for Pershore police to look at".

Yesterday, your Worcester News spoke to the driver of a van who was driving along the street at the same time as the video was being recorded.

He said he believes there will be an "accident there before long" if the children aren't spoken to.

The driver, who didn't want to be named, said: "I was driving past at the same time as the filming. One of the children threw a shoe at my van as I was driving.

"I stopped and went over to speak to them.

“It’s worrying, but it’s not an irregular occurrence there. It’s an accident waiting to happen."

Other readers took to social media to comment on the video, with some saying they even avoid driving down the road due to children playing there.
