A FOODBANK that has seen a “huge increase” in demand over recent months has been handed a much-needed boost.

Gaudet Luce Golf Club has organised a fundraising golf day in aid of Droitwich Spa Foodbank – and aims to raise about £3,000 and donate 80 bags of food.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 22, at the course in Middle Lane, Hadzor – and members of the public are being urged to sign up.

Teams of four will play a round of golf before enjoying a “superb” two-course carvery meal in the newly refurbished clubhouse.

Prizes for the leading teams, competitions such as "beat the pro", a raffle with “amazing prizes” and other fundraising activities will also entertain participants.

Mark Laing, county development officer for England Golf, who is based at Gaudet Luce and has helped organise the fundraiser, said: “The golf club here is fantastic – it does so much for the local community and continues to do so.

“We are really humbled to be able to offer our support.

“People's circumstances can change overnight and – when I saw a presentation about Droitwich Spa Foodbank – I was speechless and thought we have got to do something to help.

“The club has a great ethos and hopefully through this golf day we can do some good.”

Organisers have described the partnership between the golf club and the charity as a “unique joint venture” which links in perfectly with the foodbank’s relationship with Waitrose and England Golf’s national agreement with John Lewis to encourage its staff to try golf.

Each competitor will pay £10 to cover costs and provide a shopping bag of food valued at about £20 as an entry fee.

Droitwich Spa Foodbank is “exceedingly grateful” for the support of the golf day, according to the club.
