A SELFLESS man from Pershore donated stems cells in a brave attempt to save a stranger's life.

Andrew Stevenson, 21, of Pershore, joined the Delete Blood Cancer UK donor list at the beginning of 2015 after being inspired to "do the right thing" by an online advert.

Blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan then discovered that Mr Stevenson was a match for a stranger in desperate need of a stem cell transplant - and this month (October) the Worcestershire man donated.

He said: “I joined the register believing I could potentially save somebody's life.

"But I was still amazed when I found out that I was actually a match for someone and I had the opportunity to save their life.

“The whole process was incredibly simple and my well-being was always put first.

"The staff and volunteers at Delete Blood Cancer UK, Anthony Nolan and the University College Hospital in London were incredibly friendly and were always on hand to answer any questions I had.”

Ann O’Leary, head of register development at Anthony Nolan, added: “Andrew Stevenson has done an incredibly selfless thing and given someone with blood cancer their best chance at survival.

"We are delighted that he has been inspired to encourage others to sign up as donors. We particularly need young men to join the register as they are the most likely to be chosen to donate.”
